WORDS UNSPOKEN
PRESS RELEASE: Words Unspoken dance performance at Bijou Theatre
In an effort to end modern day slavery, GO! Contemporary Dance Works partners with Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking for October Bijou Performance
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
KNOXVILLE, TN., September 19, 2019—GO! Contemporary Dance Works will partner with local non-profit organization Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking for its upcoming show, Words Unspoken at the Bijou Theatre, October 19, 2019 at 2:30pm and 7:30pm. This multifaceted program will showcase a mix of contemporary and classical choreographic works by nine Knoxville creatives and include a new piece by guest artist Catherine Goduco-Gaudreau, formerly of the Alabama Ballet and Ballet Florida.
Featured will be the premier of Artistic Director, Lisa Hall McKee’s 20 minute work titled Trafik’d, a visual portrayal of the reality of human trafficking. A powerful display of fifteen dancers moving as a group from victim to predator to a society turning its back on this overlooked crime, moments of easiness and stillness contrast powerful unison and forceful partnering work. “Trafik’d is built around a conversation I had with Lisa Bolton, Director of Youth Services at the Community Coalition Against Human Trafficking,” states choreographer
Lisa McKee. “I asked her what would be the largest way I could misrepresent human trafficking within our area and her response was to present it as kidnapping. I was shocked.” Trafik’d answers the questions of why some are vulnerable and how they become victims. “I am confident the audience will leave emotional with a new awareness and understanding of this modern day slavery,” says McKee. “It is my hope it will inspire some to take action.”
The roster will also include works such as Sum of Parts by San Francisco choreographer Harper Addison, using intricate body gestures and floor work that separate and move back together, Opus 6, a classical pointe piece by Laura Shields, and Sans Gravity by Leah Pinder, a flowing dream state work with smooth lifts and seamless movement. “This show is a great combination of artists of so many genres,” says McKee.

Since the company’s founding in 2004, it has provided Knoxville with over 70 performances throughout East Tennessee and continues to create new works annually.
