SCENE 3: PERSEPHONE

Persephone was the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, the mother of all Nature. One day in the Nysian meadow Persephone wandered apart from her friends. Distracted by the sudden blooming of a beautiful Narcissus, the ground beneath her feet opened up and Hades, in his dark chariot, appeared before her. Hades snatched her and took her with him to the Underworld

to be his wife and queen. Demeter, angry, covered the earth with snow and began her search for her daughter, Persephone.

ACT TWO - The Underworld

Persephone sat at the throne of the Underworld as Hades’ wife and queen. Hecate, in assistance to Demeter, travelled deep into the earth and found Persephone with Hades. Zeus, wanting Demeter to bring life again to upper earth, commanded the divine messenger Hermes to bring Persephone back to her mother. Hades laughed with delight as Persephone was rescued, as he had tricked her into tasting one pomegranate seed before leaving the Underworld.

This, according to ancient laws, obliged her to return to him.

ACT THREE

Demeter was not pleased that Persephone would return to Hades. Zeus proposed a compromise. Persephone would spend two-thirds of the year with her mother, and one-third with her new husband. Everyone agreed-and that is how the seasons were born. Just like a seed, Persephone spends a few months below the earth when Demeter’s grief produces the dark, winter months. However, when Persephone goes back to her mother, Demeter brings back the light and warmth and the earth, sky and sea rejoices.
